I’m not sure that the Treehouse cafe/bistro in Baker Street really needs much introduction, but as it’s the beginning of the academic year there will be many new residents in Aberystwyth who have yet to learn that this has been one of the best places to eat here and at very reasonable prices since 1991.

The building itself is well named because it’s set over three floors, is very quaint with its winding staircases and does feel a little like you’re in a treehouse.
The ground floor houses an organic food shop and the other two floors encompass the eating areas. They offer an innovative menu using organic, local ingredients and have been recommended in the good food guide every year since 2011.

They make great homemade soup (to eat in or take away) and there’s normally a choice of two on the menu. I particularly like the pea and mint and the yellow split pea and coconut - but they make a great many more besides. The homemade bread rolls are freshly baked and often still warm, and there are alternatives for customers who can’t eat wheat or gluten.
Recently I had lunch there with a friend and I chose the Lemon and Fennel Roast Chicken with Roast Potatoes and Puy Lentils in a Red Pepper and Provençal Sauce from the Specials Board which was really good and full of flavours that worked well together.

My friend had the Chard Tortilla with a Beetroot Cream Sauce and Salad which looked really pretty on the plate, was apparently delicious and I made a mental note to have it myself another time! Amongst their ‘favourites’ are chicken burgers, veggie burgers, ploughman’s lunch and quiche of the day and a recent example of their ‘local dish’ of the day was cauliflower balti with Bombay new potatoes served with tomato relish and a green salad. Another one of their local dishes that I also enjoyed recently was their Welsh organic pork sausages with cider jus, peas and mash. They are licensed so I had a glass of Shiraz with it - delicious! The salads are always really fresh with lots of different ingredients and flavours but if you just want one of their scrumptious cakes, there’s a good selection to choose from and once again they also cater for customers who can’t eat wheat or gluten.

This is a well established place to enjoy good food and drink and pick up some delicious organic produce on your way out, and I’m sure I’m not the only customer who thinks that after all these years Aberystwyth wouldn’t be quite the same without it!
